Sixty Years War Collective is presenting a series of Mixtapes, showcasing great independent artists who are not necessarily associated with the collective. For each mix, a member of the collective will pick ten of their favorite independent musicians and bands to showcase. This second mix was compiled by James Musselman with a good deal of help from Chris Darby. Two of the songs on this mix are exclusives, “I Will Follow” by Barnswallow and “Walking Birds” by Aaron Bowen.
Two hundred years ago, people would make instruments using whatever they had available to them. These were working-class people, using the tools around them to make music. We’re doing that in a modern sense.
We used an 800 megahertz iBook. We would have computer crashes left and right. One of the songs cuts off and ends with a glitch. It stutters off. That was the best take of a slide guitar part, but at the end the computer just shut down. That’s what that sound is. I nailed it, so James looped it. He made it work. If I was in a $1000 a day studio, you wouldn’t get that.
